Job Description:

Ambatovy, a Sherritt International Nickel & Cobalt operation in Madagascar, is currently searching for an experienced Process Safety Superintendent to oversee the process safety programs and represent the company on external process safety related associations and committees.

The Role

The Process Safety Superintendent will lead and set an example for health, safety and process safety matters and work proactively within the organization to establish and maintain a system that promotes a strong culture of process safe working practices.

  • Provide direct support to operations and leadership on process safety management and process risk management

  • Ensure compliance with current process safety regulations, approved codes of practice and is proactive in improving the process safety knowledge and culture within Ambatovy

  • Oversee the development of area process safety engineers by mentoring, infield support, coaching and at time training in their knowledge of process safety management system

  • Interface with consultant firm implementing PSM program

  • Develop and lead the implementation and maintenance of process safety management standards and programs

  • Provide expert understanding and communication of process safety risks and the Ambatovy risk framework

  • Actively manages and supports the continuous improvement in knowledge of process safety risks, assessment tools and the mitigation

  • Sets and tracks goals, develops KPI's aligned with the process safety development program

  • Ensures that appropriate resources are made available to support the development of management, HS team, and other personnel on process safety management and process risk management;

  • Facilitate and document PHA / hazard evaluations of each phase of project (new process, change on existing process)

  • Support the development of knowledge of contractor personnel assigned to work in process areas

  • Assist in developing inspection, test and preventive maintenance plans and equipment reliability programs

  • Ensures process safety requirements are captured in Ambatovy operational controls and fatality prevention standards

  • Develop and ensure the process safety management of change procedure (MOC) is updated regularly, communicated in at risk areas and facilitates MOC activities and relevant workshops

  • Review and ensures alignment regarding process safety emergency situations and links to Emergency Response services and procedures

  • Oversees and at times leads process safety incident investigations, ensuring appropriate level of investigation is completed

  • Facilitate annual review of the PSM program by senior management

The Requirements

  • Formal qualifications in process safety management systems and its development study and experience is required. A technical diploma would also be desired as complementary knowledge to lead process safety development.

  • Minimum of 5 - 10 years of experience in a relevant industry with experience in varied operations and a proven track record of leadership in process safety development.

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, preferred with 10 years of experience in a similar role

  • Detailed knowledge in relevant PSM compliance requirements and standards

  • PHA/LOPA Facilitator

  • NEBOSH certificate

  • Detailed knowledge in process safety risk management

  • Knowledge and proven practical experience in process systems

  • A detailed knowledge relevant PSM legal and other requirements is required

  • Knowledge in audit management and audit implementation with the ability to evaluate and manage H&S risks

  • Required experience in complex metallurgy, chemical, oil and gas, or petrochemical industry

  • Knowledge in process & instrument design and ability to propose changes

  • Excellent organisation skills and ability to set and achieve objectives

  • Interface with external and internal regulatory bodies

  • Fluency in English with French desirable
