Job Description:

The Roads Engineer will coordinate on behalf of Cobre Panama quality engineering design services and advice for rehabilitation, maintenance and construction of assigned roads projects. Part of your duties will be to represent the owner in construction teams and to oversee contractor works (if applicable), including site inspections and management of quality control and quality assurance procedures, to ensure roads are built and maintained up to standard.

Job Requirements:

Main responsibilities:

  • Technical input into road design to ensure site roads and mining haul roads are fit for purpose;
  • Review the existing documentation for road design, specifications and current condition and propose any improvements deemed necessary;
  • Develop / Review scope of work, drawings, bills of quantity and cost estimates for each road rehabilitation, maintenance and construction effort for adequacy, soundness of engineering features and practicality prior to issuing work orders;
  • Assist in developing execution plans for the scope of works;
  • Assist in analysing bid responses and contract negotiations;
  • Inspect construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications and construction and safety standards;
  • Make recommendations on equipment needs and conducts periodic spot inspection of equipment to ensure functionality;
  • Perform field-engineering calculations to ensure work is completed within budgetary limits;
  • Carry out inspections/surveys of Project roads including bridges, drainage, signs and barriers;
  • To consider and prepare works schedules and orders and to contribute to compiling long-term programmes of work;
  • Train local employees in all phases of section operations and ensure safety and environmental procedures are followed.

Qualifications and technical competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in road design, road construction, road maintenance, storm drainage construction, civil engineering work or related field and 2+ years of supervisory experience;
  • Sound knowledge of AASHTO Road Design;
  • Previous experience in mining haul roadworks would be advantageous;
  • Numerical and analytical skills;
  • Good oral and written communications skills;
  • Leadership capabilities and able to work with local teams, ability to train, teach and mentor national staff.
  • Project and time management skills; and
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish and English) will be advantageous.

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered.
