Job Description:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and working closely with the in-country General Manager, site and corporate management, the Project Director will be responsible to develop the next gold mine in West Africa. The chosen candidate will have a demonstrated track record of successful execution on recent mining construction projects preferably in West Africa, and possesses the ability to build and confidently guide a team of employees and contractors through the construction and commissioning phases of a greenfield gold mine.

The company

The project is owned by a publicly listed company on the TSX Venture Exchange. The directors and management of have a proven track record of discovering, financing, constructing, and operating mines in West Africa and internationally. The company remains well-funded and is on track to securing full project financing in the coming quarters.

The role

  • Responsible for managing and directing the EPCM contractor, who will be responsible for the process plant, power plant and ancillary equipment, and ensuring they meet the project goals and objectives.

  • Responsible for managing, administering and controlling all aspects of the project development outside that of the EPCM contractor including:

    • Site Resettlement Action Plan and associated infrastructure.

    • Overall water supply systems including the Off-Channel Reservoir ("OCR") and associated infrastructure such as weir, intake structures and controls, pumps, piping and associated valves and controls.

    • OCR excavation including stockpiling.

    • Tailings Storage Facility

    • Site roads and bridges.

    • Camp and infrastructure.

    • Site offices, shops and warehouses including process plant offices.

    • All other items specifically excluded from the scope of work for the process plant EPCM contractor.

  • Maintain ongoing integration with the in-country administration team, in particular the General Manager.

  • Provide ongoing monthly project reporting and associated information, and project reviews as required by the CEO.

  • Establish and manage project procedures consistent with contractual documents and the relevant HSE and CSR protocols for the work.

  • Coordinate directly with the EPCM representative to ensure project procedures are followed.

  • Monitor and coordinate/communicate with EPCM contractor to ensure all discipline work follows project procedures.

  • Ensure all work products are consistent with industry standards and in accordance with good engineering and construction practice and applicable codes, and in compliance with all pertinent legal codes and requirements.

  • Ensure scope of work, schedule, and budget are clearly defined and understood by both the EPCM contractor, management and all project participants, including General Manager and CEO.

  • Determine, control, and maintain overall project and discipline schedules and budgets.

  • Track schedule and budget progress with project milestones, and takes all action necessary to keep project on track.

  • Identify and secure necessary approvals for all changes in project scope, budget and/or schedule.

  • Maintain ongoing communication with CEO, adjusting as necessary to comply with Company needs within contractual obligations, or adjusting project deliverables to meet all objectives.

  • Represent the company to all contractors, subcontractors, and vendors at kick-off meetings, job walkthroughs, project review, and other meetings and correspondences.

  • Ensure all contractors and sub-contractors meet and maintain work to the company's environmental, health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work.

  • Responsible for hiring and managing the on-site construction team necessary to manage and oversee activities as necessary outside of the EPCM contractor scope.

The requirements

  • Strong communicator. Fluency in French and English is preferred but French is not mandatory.

  • Recognized university degree in Mining or Mining related engineering field is preferable but relevant technical background, experience and track record will be strongly considered.

  • A minimum of twenty years of progressive experience in the field directly engaged in the practice of construction or construction management of mining-related projects.

  • Experience in the management of contractors, contract admistration and overall schedule control.

  • Experience in an African environment (preferably West Africa) or in developing countries is a prerequisite.

  • Excellent communication, presentation and reporting skills. Able to work effectively with members from all levels of the organization and to cultivate productive relationships with staff, contractors, government officials, community members, and other mining companies in West Africa.

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple project demands simultaneously to meet mission critical deadlines.

  • Strong computer literacy skills - MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint). Familiarity with Project Management Software at a minimum.


The position is a fixed term employment contract for a period of 18 to 24 months during the development and construction of the project. Preference will be given to candidates who are available immediately.


This role will be based at the project's mine site in West Africa. Some travel may be required as needed.
