Job Description:

We have an excellent opportunity for a Mining Manager to join Roxgold, a TSX listed gold miner with focus in West Africa


Company Overview


Roxgold has engaged Globe 24-7 to source the Mining Manager for their flagship Yaramoko gold project in Burkina Faso. The Yaramoko gold mine is situated in the Houndé greenstone belt region in the Province of Balé in southwestern Burkina Faso. It consists of two high-grade underground gold mines, with longhole stoping being its primary method at this 1,100 tonne-per-day operation.


The Role
The Mining Manager is responsible to provide operational management and leadership to the mining department by developing, implementing and optimizing the systems, structures and processes for the safe and efficient operation of the mine.


Responsibilities


General


Manage the daily activities of the Technical Services team at site including:



  • Directly managing the Technical Services Manager and indirectly managing the Geology, Geo-Technical, Mine Planning (Medium and Long Term) personnel and their activities to ensure the mining department deliverables are achieved.

  • Overseeing and providing technical expertise in regards the underground project development.

  • Driving a culture of quality and efficiency within the department focused on maximizing grade.

  • Ensuring the procedures, practices and systems to the Mining department are quickly implemented and operating effectively.

  • Act as the General Manager of Operations on alternate swings.


Contractor Management


As the main liaison between the company and the underground Mining Contractor the Mining Manager will:



  • Closely monitor the daily, weekly, monthly and annual activities of the Contractor against the agreed contract.

  • Ensure the delivery of expected outcomes are achieved by the Contractor (eg. tonnage, budget, resourcing etc.)

  • Participate and manage the review of the contract between the Contractor and the company

  • Proactively manage the Contractor to ensure issues are identified and resolved as quickly as possible

  • Liaise between Management and the Contractor to keep both parties working together at optimum to achieve expected deliverables

  • Develop reporting mechanism to ensure the company management team are kept informed of progress


Safety Management within the Department



  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety, and environmental and Social Responsibility practices.

  • Ensure every person within team is fit for work.

  • Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.

  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with the company standards and procedures

  • Ensure hazard management plans are observed.

  • Keep statutory and internal reporting as required.


Budget and Financial Support:



  • Work with the General Manager to establish a budget and operating budget.

  • Ensure all charges remain within budget, report on cost variances and identify merit based continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Plan, approve and monitor departmental operating budgets and capital expenditures to meet stakeholder and strategic objectives.

  • Review and recommend major transactions for purchases and contracts.


Compliance / Quality Control



  • Ensure personnel have the appropriate equipment, licenses, skills, induction and training to safely undertake their tasks.

  • Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards.

  • Consistently maintain a high quality of work across all allocated functions.

  • Interpret legislation, government standards and agreements.

  • Provide input/informed commentary, improvement opportunities and areas of risk to management.

  • Be accountable for the quality of work output from the unit/department.

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements as well as Company Policy, Standards, and Procedures through training and development of staff and promoting by example.


Staff Development:



  • Provide guidance, coaching and technical assistance and support to the Technical Services team.

  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Promote and develop the skills of subordinates through the transfer of technology and skill development through on-the-job training programs.

  • Conduct formal career development discussions with employees and identify development opportunities and programs that assist with defining future career progression possibilities.


Constraints, Framework & Boundaries


The incumbent is responsible for ensuring mining activities remain within budget and that exceptions are highlighted and discussed with the relevant parties as required.


The incumbent is responsible for highlighting and reporting breaches in compliance particularly with all statutory requirements and company standards.


Requirements



  • 10 - 15 years in similar mining-based roles.

  • Tertiary qualified in Mining.

  • Extensive knowledge of underground gold operations in developing countries essential

  • Strong knowledge of Mine Planning process. Incorporating Geology, Engineering and Operations

  • French language skills desired, not essential

  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and build effective relationships and networks.

  • Possesses strong influencing skills and the ability to develop an effective team.

  • Demonstrates strong conceptual skills, and be capable of developing lateral and practical solutions.

  • Ability to respond to a changing work environment.

  • The ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time.

  • A reputation for integrity and ethics.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
