A global mining company and Australia's top producer that owns and operates a portfolio of mines and has strong pipeline of exploration projects.

The Role:

The purpose of the role is to provide safe, efficient and cost-effective operational control and leadership of the Environmental Department aligned to the business strategy and goals. This person will provide leadership, supporting the development of the Departmental strategy to align with the business needs as per the three-year budget and life of mine plan. The Environmental Superintendent makes timely criterion-based decisions, communicates to relevant people, implements, monitors and reports on outcomes and mitigates business disruption through forward planning and analysis. This role will be driving behaviours, accountabilities, standards and frameworks to develop and maintain a business focused, high performance culture enabling continuous improvement. It facilitates cross departmental co-operation and collaboration to maximise business value; ensuring site and corporate strategic initiatives are translated into business goal.

The Responsibilities:

The focus areas of the role are the optimisation and communication of environmental systems and procedures, development and maintenance of mine closure plans to support current and future operational activities.

Safety: Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe working environment:

  • Supporting the Safety Management System ensuring a safety-first work culture

  • Ensuring safe systems of work are in place for all activities; ensuring personnel are trained, inducted and competent to perform work; ensuring competent supervision

  • Ensuring adequate pro-active monitoring to maintain a safe work environment

  • Ensuring adequate tools, equipment and resources are available to ensure tasks can be carried out safely

  • Taking a proactive risk management approach to departmental tasks, i.e., recognise, analyse, respond to ensure risks are at an acceptable level; ensuring hazards are identified and controlled in line with company standards

  • Developing and maintaining standard work procedures and safe systems of work; enforcing compliance

  • Ensuring personnel are adequately trained to safely complete work requirements; coach and mentor where required

  • Conducting VFSLs, FCCCs and SVs in accordance with the site objectives

  • Participate in facilitating the initiatives and workshops

  • Ensuring all staff within your team are adequately trained to organization's safety standards

  • Ensuring close out of CHESS and CCM incidents and safety actions within the required timeframe

Technical: Demonstrate technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and providing guidance:

  • Ensuring absolute statutory compliance, obtaining relevant operational approvals and reporting on time to relevant regulatory bodies (e.g. Mine Closure Plan, Waste Rock Management Plan, AER)

  • Co-ordinating the development of progressive rehabilitation and mine closure plans in conjunction with the Planning and Technical Services teams

  • Co-ordinating and managing activities undertaken by the broader environmental team

  • Co-ordinating and managing contractors and their activities in your area

  • Adequately understand cost drivers to effectively compile, manage and report on departmental budgets and resources.

  • Co-ordinating and administering relevant environmental projects and studies (e.g. closure research, beneficial water use, dingo management, etc)

  • Opportunity Identification: defining new or alternative opportunities within the Province considering new resource information, technology and techniques communicating with relevant stakeholders.

  • Communication & Governance: communicating and working closely with stakeholders to ensure work is aligned with the site team's work programs; providing input and reviewing operational plans such as the mine closure and progressive rehabiliation plans; communicating and collaborating with the group technical services team as required

Leadership: Demonstrate leadership with the highest professional and ethical standards ensuring all actions are transparent and in accordance with company policy and values by:

  • Openly support Company policy regardless of personal views

  • Ensuring uniformity of policy application across the site in co-operation with other departments to meet Company objectives

  • Promoting a site wide, team-based culture between employees, departments and contractors

  • Working closely with departmental personnel developing, planning, and implementing strategies to maximise operational efficiency

  • Developing and supporting the team to continually improve the operational processes.

  • Identifying and actively developing/coaching key personnel for career development; developing a succession plan; identify high potential personnel and support the performance review and management processes

  • Ensuring all personnel understand relevant operational strategies and goals, translating the vision into day to day activities

  • Ensuring high performing team culture (build trust, healthy conflict, commitment, accountability, team results)

  • Communicating and supporting the team to understand how they add value to the business

  • Developing monthly team KPI's to drive accountability and reward achievement

Planning & Scheduling:

  • Participating in site business planning and PoaP

  • Communicating the PoaP and ensuring team ownership

  • Ensuring work plans and resource needs are developed and communicated in a timely manner

  • Monitoring and control budget vs actuals; escalating issues and actions plans to address under performance

  • Providing input into monthly, quarterly and annual planning and budgeting processes

The Requirements:


  • Bachelor or higher-level degree (preferably in an Environmental Science discipline)

  • Minimum of five years' relevant experience, preferably in a mix of roles within an extractive industry and/or in major infrastructure project delivery.

Technical Capabilities


  • A high level of understanding the fundamentals of social and economic development and the roles of First Nations, government and business.

  • Demonstrated basic skills in negotiations and conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrated basic capacity in community engagement.

  • Demonstrated basic skills in social and cultural heritage risk assessment and development of mitigation strategies.

  • Experience in managing community grievances, concerns and complaints, and conflict management generally.


  • Demonstrated knowledge of ground and surface Hydrology

  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems and the practical application of mitigation planning.

  • Hands-on experience in applied scientific research and analysis, particularly Environmental impact and risk assessment.

Non-Technical Capabilities

  • Proven self-starter with tenacity and high energy.

  • Proven ability to write and verbally communicate at a professional level.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a high level of discretion and diplomacy.

  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams and guide good outcomes.

  • Able to understand the ways in which people interact and behave, and how this and communication styles and protocols may differ from place to place and affect outcomes.

  • An ability to identify risks and identify strategies to mitigate.

  • Comfortable working in remote environments with occasional international travel

  • Working rights in Canada required.
