The Role


Accountable for the Cerro Blanco┬┤s environmental compliance and understanding the importance of the environment on local interests, our communities, and consultation for both licences and operations.


The role will involve examining corporate activities to determine where and how improvements can be made and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation across the organization.


Key areas of responsibility:



  • Work with the HSEC Senior Manager to ensure appropriate planning for health, safety, environment and community compliance and activities.

  • Ensure the execution of all requirements under Environmental Social Management Plan ("ESMP").

  • Design, implement and execute integrated management systems and standards, policies, and procedures in relation to the Environment.

  • Provide safe, efficient and cost-effective project control and leadership of the Environmental Department aligned to the business strategy and goals.

  • Drive behaviours, accountabilities, standards and frameworks to develop and maintain a business focused, high performance culture enabling continuous improvement.

  • Manage all environmental activities, including the preparation of environmental studies to apply, modify or amend environmental license applications and to ensure compliance with applicable permits, laws and regulations, as well as internal policies. Running and tracking the annual budget and costs for the department.

  • Implement the strategies, policies, plans, programs, and environmental projects aligned with Corporate goals. Implementing and controlling the management mechanisms to allow measurement of the overall environmental compliance as per local and international regulations and standards, according with the phases the company is going through or will be.

  • Develop and implement environmental strategies and action plans, to make sure the corporate sustainable development, by warranting, monitoring, and controlling the environmental compliance of all company departments.

  • Implement and guarantee the executions of environmental plans in case of environmental events or contingencies. Reviewing, implementing and maintain process reports in compliance with all relevant corporate, territorial, and federal environmental requirements, guidelines and permits.

  • Ensure all construction work is planned and executed in accordance with the required standards (IFC, World Bank, and Government authorities).

  • Liaise closely with the CSR department to ensure all RAP (Resettlement Action Plan) and associated environmental programs are correctly planned, managed and implemented

  • Set up and implement the appropriate environmental monitoring programs (site water, air, wildlife, aquatic and other) for the construction and operational phase, including recording all necessary data, filling all mandatory reports to the Company and government agencies, and implementing all actions plans as required (e.g. emergency response plans).

  • Communicate requirements to the construction teams (owner and contractors) so that all work is properly planned and conducted.

  • Review and recommend improvements to existing environmental strategies.

  • Develop and conduct training and educational programs, new hires onboarding, assessments, and training personnel in the action plans for the site in case of environmental incident, with specific tasks, and responses to specific types of incidents.

  • Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe working environment.

  • Integrate environmental initiatives into departmental planning, decision making, systems and processes.

  • Promote awareness and establish appropriate departmental targets to prevent harm and/or complain. Creating awareness program in and outside the organization regarding environmental protection issues, methods to combat such environmental hazards, and generate a sense of responsibility towards protecting the environment.

  • Ensure hazards and sources of loss are identified, evaluated, and controlled.

  • Provide visible leadership to improve health, safety, environmental and community risk identification, reporting and incident management.

  • Develop, implement, and improve the Company HSE Management Systems to conform IFC guidelines and ensure compliance with ISO guidelines.

  • Complete and or review necessary statutory HSEC reports and ensure accurate internal reporting of HSEC performance.

  • Prepare timely, accurate and detailed reports to meet Company requirements, assuming lead responsibility in the Company


Our Requirements:


Formal Education, Certifications or Equivalents



  • Recognized accreditations and / or college degree in environmental sciences or related field


Working Experience - Nature & Length



  • Minimum 5 years in similar position, or 10 years as Environmental Engineer


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Extensive professional work experience in the field of environmental management, with specific experience in the mining sector in Latin America

  • Prior involvement with the construction project and permitting

  • Experience implementing environmental management systems as ISO 14001

  • Bilingual in English/ Spanish

  • Self-motivated, well organised with attention to detail and adaptable, with high initiative and excellent communication and stakeholder engagement experience, negotiation skills.

  • Result driven

  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental compliance, rules, and regulations.

  • Broad knowledge of the mining industry, international exposure, and appreciation of the environmental and community relations aspects of a project's success including opportunities and liabilities.

  • Exposure to industry specific work practices, including waste management, pollution prevention, environmental monitoring, biodiversity, and sustainability

  • Strong organizational skills and report writing experience in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented workplace; and

  • Ability to relocate to Guatemala or follow a FIFO rotation
