Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work out of our mill site near Athabasca, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise on rotating and/or static equipment to support operation of the Al-Pac Kraft Pulp mill. Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, this individual is responsible for leading the design and implementation of complex mechanical systems in the mill including detailed engineering, technical oversight, and troubleshooting.

Role Responsibilities


  • Design Engineering - Creating detailed mechanical designs for new equipment, modifications to existing systems, and process improvements using engineering tools.
  • Technical Expertise - Providing technical guidance on mechanical equipment selection, sizing, and performance optimization, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Engineering Inspections - Carry out inspections to evaluate the quality of engineering works and / or the integrity of existing equipment, installations, and structures, and make recommendations on remedial works needed to ensure conformance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshooting - Identifying and resolving complex mechanical issues within operating plants, collaborating with maintenance teams to optimize equipment reliability.
  • Engineering Standards Specification - Create and maintain engineering standards for internal and external use that comply with codes, regulations, best practices, and Al-Pac requirements.
  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance - Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards during piping design and construction, addressing factors such as material selection, containment measures, and emergency response plans.
  • Technical Leadership/Mentorship - Provide technical guidance, leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and other team members.
  • Equipment Selection - Responsible for leading mechanical equipment specifications and selection activities for the project in front-end and detailed engineering phases. Including ensuring equipment complies with appropriate industry and Al-Pac standards.
  • Project Support - Participate in capital expenditures by developing operational and maintenance requirements. Prepare technical specifications, material selection, and piping standards for projects.


Role Requirements


  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Registered as a P.Eng with APEGA (or be eligible to register).
  • 10+ years progressive, related experience industrial plants or manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software. (eg AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Caesar II).
  • Familiarity with common metallurgies used in industrial environments, weld procedures, related ASME codes and pertinent API documents used for guiding design.
  • Experience in developing equipment specifications and data sheets.
  • Experience performing hydraulic and stress analysis to determine pipe sizing, pressure ratings, and pipe supports.
  • Competency with alterations to pressure vessels and piping per API 510/570 & NBIC NB-23.
  • Project Management experience, education and registration considered desirable.
  • Strong organizing and record management skills.
  • Strong engineering, technical computer skills (AutoCad Suite, SAP etc).
  • Strong generalized computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Sharepoint, MS Teams etc).
