Staff Mechanical Engineer - Power Electronics
Location: San Francisco, CA (On-site / Hybrid)
Company: Anode Technology Company
About Us:
Anode exists to accelerate the monumental shift away from the supersystem of extraction, processing, and burning of fossil fuels - toward lightweight capture and consumption from entirely renewable sources. While decarbonization seems beyond our horizon, we remain undaunted - the long arc of energy consumption must bend toward sustainability. We believe in energy from renewable sources, seamlessly integrated into everyday life. The future is silent, efficient, zero-emission, flexible, distributed, and clean.
Position Overview: Anode seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design of critical power electronics subsystems within our modular mobile battery energy storage system (mBESS). This role involves complete design engineering ownership of multiple power electronics subsystems, including inverters and DC-DC converters, from concept through design, validation, and production. This position will leverage architecture, requirements, and key components that are defined by systems engineering in order to accomplish a conforming design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Power Electronics Subsystem Ownership: Take full responsibility for the mechanical design, thermal management, and integration of enclosure-contained power electronics subsystems including inverters, DC-DC converters, and related subsystems within the mBESS architecture.
- Technical Design & Analysis: Lead comprehensive engineering of power electronics enclosures, thermal solutions, and mounting systems. Conduct detailed FEA, CFD, and thermal analysis to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with architecture-responsible systems engineering counterparts to ensure power electronics subsystems integrate seamlessly with the overall mBESS architecture while meeting performance requirements.
- Electrical Integration & Protection: Design robust IP-rated enclosures to protect sensitive electronics from environmental factors. Engineer complex cable harness routing and busbar designs optimized for sustained high-current applications.
- Thermal Management System Design: Develop innovative cooling solutions for high-power density electronics, optimizing for efficiency, reliability, and cost.
- Design for Manufacturability: Create production-ready designs with comprehensive DFM/DFA implementation. Develop detailed documentation, tolerance studies, and assembly processes.
- Prototyping & Validation: Lead laboratory testing and field validation of power electronics subsystems, documenting performance against specifications and identifying optimization opportunities.
- Technical Leadership: Provide expert guidance on power electronics mechanical design challenges. Mentor junior engineers and interface with external partners.
Qualifications:
Must Have:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 8+ years of mechanical design experience with a focus on power electronics packaging and thermal management
- Expert proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD software and PDM/PLM systems
- Strong background in thermal analysis, FEA, and CFD simulation specifically for electronic systems
- Extensive experience with cooling system design for high-power electronics (air, liquid, or phase-change)
- Deep understanding of materials selection for thermal interfaces, EMI shielding, and structural integrity
- Proven experience taking power electronics subsystems from concept to production
- Experience with environmental and reliability testing of electronic systems
- Track record of working closely with electrical and systems engineers
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Experience with battery systems, inverters, and DC-DC converters in energy storage applications
- Automotive, energy storage systems, and/or industrial equipment product development background
- Knowledge of relevant standards and certifications (UL, IEC, etc.) for power electronics systems
- Experience with vibration analysis and mitigation for electronics
- Understanding of high-voltage safety requirements and design considerations
- Ingress Protection development experience related to thermal management or power electronics packaging
