Title: Electrical Engineer
Location: Peoria, IL
Details: 12-month contract with ongoing need, opportunity for direct hire
Pay Rate: $65.00 - 70.00/hr. with benefit inclusions
Key Responsibilities:
This position focuses on an 8MW, 3000-volt DC power supply for a large mining truck. The project involves developing a new machine that attaches to a rail. The power supply takes medium voltage into switchgear, reducing it to below 1000 volts DC to power the rail. This is a prototype design project that is outsourced, and the role will involve taking this aspect into production, working with validation, and troubleshooting issues throughout the process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and own test plans, validation procedures, and documentation to ensure functional and performance compliance.
- Prototype, debug, and analyze faults in power electronic systems hardware (inverters/converters) and optimize designs.
- Collaborate with design engineers to ensure smooth transition from design to validation and production.
- Work with mechanical, PCB layout, and firmware engineers to develop and validate designs.
- Utilize laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal cameras, etc.) for detailed analysis and root cause investigations.
- Perform design validation under various operating conditions (temperature, voltage, load profile, EMI/EMC).
- Interface with suppliers and internal manufacturing teams for design for testability (DFT) and design for manufacturing (DFM).
- Maintain rigorous safety protocols during high voltage testing activities.
- Work with documentation on troubleshooting and development processes.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in power electronics testing and validation.
- Hands-on experience with converter/inverter prototyping, test benches, and debugging.
- Strong understanding of DC-DC converters, AC-DC inverters, magnetics, and control algorithms.
- Proficiency in using lab instruments and data acquisition tools.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or LTspice.
- Experience with standards and compliance (UL, IEC, ISO) for power electronics systems.
- General knowledge of electrical systems, regulations, and compliance.
- Experience working with switchgear.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with automated test systems.
- Understanding of EMI/EMC testing, thermal design, and environmental validation.
- Knowledge of embedded systems and microcontroller-based converter control.
- Experience with switchgear, converter, and inverter systems.
