Job Description:

GRAM's mission is to secure humanity's galactic future. As a foundational robotics company, we build the machines, models, and algorithms that solve the core physical challenges preventing self-sustaining off-world presence. Our first product is a general purpose insectoid that operates autonomously through the most challenging unstructured environments, on Earth and Mars.

LEAD MECHANICAL ENGINEER, ROBOTICS

As a Founding Engineer, you will own the mechanical architecture, design, and validation for our first prototypes. Your work will turn vision into functional hardware and lay the groundwork for future scaled production.

  • $130,000 to $180,000 USD + Founding Equity

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead full mechanical design lifecycle for novel robotic systems including chassis, manipulators, legs, joints, and payload interfaces
  • Manage component selection, specifications, and vendor relationships for custom mechanical part fabrication
  • Perform engineering analyses (FEA, dynamics, thermal) and develop validation test plans to ensure robust system performance
  • Support the development of scalable manufacturing processes for mechanical and embedded systems, leveraging rapid prototyping

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS/BS in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years experience designing complex electromechanical or robotic systems (practical achievements prioritized over formal credentials)
  • Expertise in 3D CAD, manufacturing drawings, and hands-on prototyping/testing
  • Proficiency in core mechanical engineering principles (structures, dynamics, materials, thermal) and robotic component integration
  • Experience leading technical efforts in a dynamic startup environment with excellent cross-functional communication

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience designing multi-legged robots or complex multi-DOF manipulators
  • Track record developing rugged systems for demanding outdoor or industrial environments
  • Proficiency with advanced multi-body dynamics simulation tools
  • History of driving hardware products through rapid prototype cycles toward production

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Significant impact and ownership on shaping our core technology, product direction, and company culture from day one
  • Exposure to cutting-edge challenges across robotics, AI, and system design for extreme environments
  • Meals provided when working at the El Segundo HQ
  • A dynamic, collaborative, and mission-driven R&D environment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work full-time on-site in El Segundo, CA is essential
  • Ability to work long-hours in a fast-paced, dynamic early-stage R&D environment where requirements and priorities may evolve
