Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for precision assembly, fabrication, hands-on prototyping, and supporting product development through iterative testing and optimization. You will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams across Mechanical, Electronics, AI, and Software domains to bring cutting-edge products from concept to reality with the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate, assemble, and troubleshoot mechanical prototypes and systems using a range of manufacturing techniques including 3D printing (FDM/SLA), laser cutting, and manual workshop operations.
  • Create rapid jigs, fixtures, and test setups for product validation and experimental studies.
  • Read and interpret technical blueprints, drawings, and schematics accurately to guide assembly and fabrication processes.
  • Conduct hands-on testing, collect experimental data, perform root cause analysis, and recommend design improvements based on test outcomes.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by proactively identifying inefficiencies and suggesting optimizations in line with Kaizen principles.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure seamless integration between mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems.
  • Document all fabrication processes, assembly instructions, testing protocols, and results through detailed text, images, videos, and structured reports.
  • Research and validate new materials, fabrication methods, and assembly practices using diverse sources and tools, including AI-driven research support.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant workshop environment by adhering to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Manage project timelines efficiently and ensure that all assigned tasks and milestones are met.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Exceptional hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and precision in assembling small mechanical components.
  • Strong practical experience in:
  • 3D Printing (FDM and/or SLA) operations, troubleshooting, and parameter optimization.
  • Laser cutting setup and operations, including material calibration and vector editing.
  • Workshop tool usage: drilling, tapping, cutting, grinding, fastening, heat treating, etc.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading, mechanical drawing interpretation, and adherence to manufacturing tolerances.
  • Solid skills in problem-solving, with a hands-on approach to identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions on the workshop floor.
  • Experience in designing and executing data-driven testing protocols with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective documentation and team collaboration.
  • High drive for accuracy, quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in 3D CAD modeling software (preferably Fusion 360 or equivalent) following Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
  • Good understanding of mechanical principles, structural strength calculations, and basic materials science for appropriate material selection.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment with professionalism and a solutions-driven mindset.
  • Strong research skills with the ability to source, cross-validate, and synthesize technical information for engineering decisions.
  • Commitment to safety practices, ESD precautions, compliance protocols, and workshop cleanliness.
  • Proven time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Basic knowledge of electronics assembly, soldering, and PCB prototyping.
  • Intermediate skills in Arduino and microcontroller programming.
  • Experience or willingness to learn post-processing and surface finishing techniques for plastics and metals.
  • Exposure to vacuum casting, injection molding, and other prototyping/low-volume production techniques.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) for basic mechanical simulations.
  • Basic understanding of desktop CNC machining operations, fixturing, and toolpath generation.
