System/Mechanical Engineer - Rolling Stock (5-10 Years of Experience)
We are seeking an experienced System/Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in the development and integration of complex systems for passenger and freight rail vehicles. This role is ideal for a technically hands-on, detail-oriented professional who thrives on cross-functional collaboration and system-level thinking.
About the Role
As a System/Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for defining, integrating, testing, and supporting key rolling stock systems such as HVAC, braking, pneumatic, mechanical interfaces, and communication systems. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across all phases of the project lifecycle: from concept development to manufacturing support, in-service troubleshooting, and refurbishment.
This position requires strong coordination skills to ensure that all subsystems operate as an integrated whole and meet regulatory, operational, and client-specific requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Define system-level requirements, interfaces, and performance criteria for various mechanical and onboard systems (excluding detailed electrical design).
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to ensure consistency and alignment between design outputs and system requirements.
- Work closely with internal electrical and mechanical engineering teams to manage cross-disciplinary interfaces.
- Analyze functional performance and safety risks, supporting FMEA and system-level hazard assessments.
- Develop and maintain interface control documents (ICDs), system block diagrams, and requirement traceability matrices.
- Review and validate supplier documentation and component data to ensure compatibility and compliance with technical specs.
- Contribute to testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation of new or modified vehicles.
- Contribute to the development of verification and validation plans, test procedures, and technical reports required for certification.
- Coordinate with regulatory authorities, certifiers, and clients to ensure systems meet all applicable standards (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, etc.).
- Stay up to date with evolving industry trends, technologies, and regulations impacting system integration and safety in rolling stock.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering.
- Member of OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) or another provincially recognized engineering regulatory body in Canada.
- 5-10 years of experience in systems engineering within the rail, transportation, or related industries.
- Strong understanding of rolling stock systems integration and relevant industry standards (APTA, AAR, TC, EN series, ).
- Experience managing interfaces across mechanical and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with maintenance and lifecycle challenges associated with passenger and freight rolling stock.
- Proficiency with CAD tools and system-level architecture documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset for collaboration with clients and suppliers.
